Information provided here is for the enjoyment of pitching competitive horseshoes. Join us . Pitching for all ages, bring the whole family! Some of our club members pitch at other clubs on a weekly basis. There are 22 clubs in Northern California with which we are affiliated. The Northern California Horseshoe Pitching Association (NCHPA) is a charter member of the National Horseshoe Pitching Association (NHPA) The club has members of all ages from 6 to 80 yrs. old (+ or -). There are free instructions for all beginners upon request. The facility is owned by the City of Tulare and open to the public. All we ask is that you maintain the courts and leave things as you found them. We have 10 courts with sand pits, and full length concrete walkways. The club has been in Tulare since 1980 or before? Pitch and Win : Oct. 18,2008 at International Agri Center (4500 S. Laspina - Tulare CA) www.kidsfestival2008.com
Results: The kids (ages 3 to 18) pitched shoes FREE from a close distance and got free candy and coupons from Black Bear Diner for free kids meal and also for a cobbler. Also donated were coupons from the Perferred Outlets At Tulare along with a gift basket and (2)- theatre tickets for two that was used for a free drawing for the kids. The Tulare Horseshoe Club also put a set of pitching shoes into the free drawing for a girl and one set for a boy. We had about 225 kids pitch shoes and a few adults. Special THANKS to the Tulare 4-H Club for all there help and hard work to make this event happen. The Tulare Co. 4-H Program has a horseshoe pitching project available for all kids in 4-H. Equipment The following equipment will help you be more comfortable, some is mandatory for sanctioned play:

Your own horseshoes, a small towel and measuring devices.
Enough money to pay the scorekeepers, plus your entry fee. Each player must pay the scorekeeper $.50 per game at the beginning of each game. You have the opportunity to earn $1.00 per game by keeping score. All pitchers are encouraged to learn and help when needed.
An $8.00 playing fee is charged unless otherwise stated of the schedule. Clubs purchase awards, pay for donuts and coffee from this fee. A percentage of the money goes to the NCHPA to assist with administrative expenses.
Neatness is encouraged. Club shirts are not mandatory, but are highly encouraged. In any case a shirt must be worn.
It is wise to take an ice chest with cold drinks and lunch. Often there is not a place close by to purchase food and drink. Chairs and Beer is not allowed inside the courts during a sanctioned tournament.
Most players take folding lawn chairs and a shade and/or clamp on umbrellas. Seating in the shade is often not available.
It is advisable to bring a jacket when leaving your area.

Club Needs

Clubs needs and responsibilities It is the responsibility of the Tulare Horseshoe Pitching Club and its members to prepare the sand prior to a tournament, keep tourney results, help with score keeping, put out chairs and shade for people keeping score, paint stakes, put out brooms, rakes and or shovels, fix coffee and provide drinking water, bring ice, (for cold drinks), buy donuts, set up the sign-in table and shades or turn on lights, remove weeds from the court area, and do general maintenance during the tournaments played here. The more club members who are willing to help the easier it will be for all of us. There is usually a work party prior to one of our tournaments. This is normally held on a Friday prior to a tournament, or a couple of hours before a league night. (check our web for NHPA sanctioned tournaments, league and other events held by the club) Please help sell raffle tickets available from the club president (valued at around $10.00). The proceeds from this raffle help the financial situation of our club. We are receptive to new ideas that you may have to improve club format. It is really fun, but some work is involved to keep our club active and growing. THANKS

Health Benifits of Horseshoe Pitching

Here is what you do during a tournament of only 7 games: You walk 6400 feet per tournament including 40 warm up shoes 160 deep knee bends each time you pick up your shoes 320 swings of arm as you release the shoe. 20 tourneys per year. 128,000 feet or 24.3 miles 3200 knee bends 6400 swings of your arm. That’s not including league nights, and normal practices. If you include 400 shoes per week practice and league then you’re getting quite a workout. Much more than a poker game, darts, or many other games would give you!

How its done in Northern California for horseshoe pitching

Northern California Horseshoe Pitchers Association (NCHPA) Tournament Structure

Tournaments are scheduled from February to November, usually on Saturdays or Sundays throughout the season. Generally you will be placed in a 6, 7, or 8 person “round robin” according to your ringer percentage. This is established by pitching 100 consecutive shoes and counting to ringers IE; 4 ringers = 4%, 60 ringers = 60%. Your first tournament result will begin an average percent from the tournaments in which you pitch. Please be aware that round robins are made up from those who attend the event; therefore, it is possible that you may be competing against players who carry a higher or lower percentage than yourself. The results of each tournament are given to the National Statistics office (Natstats), which keeps a record of all National Horseshoe Pitchers Association (NHPA) members. You must sign-in no later than 9:30 AM unless otherwise stated on the NCHPA schedule. It is wise to allow ample travel time to avoid disappointment. The official starting time for most NCHPA events is 10:00 AM. It is wise to check the schedule carefully for the category of tournament prior to making travel plans. Be certain you are eligible to participate. Lower percentage pitchers may begin pitching at approximately 1:30 PM depending on the number of pitchers attending and the number of courts available. Please be advised that a 10:00 AM start time does not necessarily mean that you will play at 10:00 AM. The groups usually begin with the highest percentage players, in attendance, in the earlier groups, working down to the lower percentage players pitching later in the day. Most all Northern Calif. tournaments are mixed, by mixed it is meant that men, women, juniors, elders are grouped according to their ringer percentage . The 9:30 AM sign-in deadline is necessary because of the limitations in the number of courts and to organize the “round robins” as quickly and fairly as possible. If you know how to keep score, players are asked to assume to responsibility of keeping score.

NorCal Championships If you wish to compete in this tournament, in which you will play in your own percentage group fro the championship of that group, you must have competed in five (5) NCHPA sanctioned tournaments. New pitchers, after August 1st, need only three (3). This is a pre-registered tournament

California State Championships If you wish to compete in this tournament you must have competed in four (4) sanctioned tournaments before the August deadline. This is a pre-registered tournament.

NorCal Team Championships If you wish to compete in this tournament, simply gather up 4 members from your club and sign up. Each member of your team must wear his or her club shirt though. This is an 80% handicapped tournament and great fun. For more information please see nchpa by-laws
